Tools

All the Build-It-Yourself recommended tools can be ordered from the Stock Room.  No one should use these tools until they have memorized the Tool Rules!

Supplies

Get some scraps of wood and sheet rock screws of varying lengths.  You can find bass wood at most craft supply stores or in the Stock Room

Then collect some tin cans and Premium Quality Junk.  Sheets of Foamies from craft stores are useful.

Make a bunch of body parts

Practice drawing Cartoon Faces.  Then draw big eyes on white sheets of Foamies or cardboard.

Try hot gluing nuts or wine corks to small pieces of Foamies.  They make good noses.

Then you can attach these parts by sticking a toothpick through the foam rubber into a fruit or vegetable.  This way you can reuse or interchange the parts.

RC Chassis and Tin Can Base

You could hot glue a tin can to a wood base.  Stick a wire into your head and then bend the wire so it presses against the inside of the can.  You could also use a pencil or chop stick.  Fill the can with small rocks to secure the wire, pencil or chop stick.

Wear eye goggles when cutting and bending wire.  Follow the Tool Rules.

Foam Rubber Base

You could cut and bend some foam rubber into a body shape.  Stick a wire into your head and through the foam rubber.  You could also use a pencil or tooth picks.  Then hot glue the foam rubber to a wood platform.

Wear eye goggles when cutting and bending wire.  Follow the Tool Rules.

Styrofoam Base

Look for some packing Styrofoam and cut it into a body shape.  Styrofoam is light and you can stick pipe cleaners and wire into the Styrofoam easily.  Hot glue the Styrofoam onto a wood platform.

Cut out some hands from Foamies and hot glue them to the ends of pipe cleaners.

What did you learn?

  1. Will your chassis move quicker if the weight of your goblin is heavier or lighter?  Why?

  2. Will your inventions be more likely to tip over if the center of gravity is higher or lower?  Why?

  3. What are 3 important measures of a good sign?

  4. What are facial characteristics of an expression that is mean?  stupid?  happy?

  5. What are the Build-It-Yourself tool rules?

  6. What are the advantages of connecting pieces with screws and rubber bands as opposed to glue?

  7. If you use glue, which is more important to increase the strength of the glue bond?

    1. Use a mess of glue.

    2. Hold the pieces together tightly until the glue dries.

  8. Why should you drill holes before fastening two pieces with screws?
