Workshop Rules and Policies
Return to Workshops

To Parents Regarding Cuts and Burns:
Hundreds of Build-It-Yourself workshops have been conducted serving hundreds of children for more than 5 years.  There have been numerous minor cuts and burns, none of which has required medical attention.  However, you must be aware that there is the potential for injuries.  We do not use power cutting tools, but we do use hot glue guns and we hand cut and bend hard materials.  In addition, there is always the possibility the children may poke each other accidentally.  If you are concerned, you are encouraged to attend the workshops with your child.

All children will be asked to memorize the following guidelines and recite them before each workshop. If any child persists in disregarding these rules or otherwise disrupts the building spirit, that child may be asked to leave the workshop.

Build-It-Yourself will agree to work with your child only if you will agree that Build-It-Yourself and any of its agents are not responsible for any injuries to your child.

Build-It-Yourself Tool Rules:
  1. Don't cut your finger off. The more fingers you have the easier it is to build.
  2. Think what would happen if you slipped . Before you apply pressure, think what would happen if you slipped. Cut, push, pull or squeeze only if you are certain you or others would not get hurt if something slipped.
  3. Hold your work firmly. It is much easier and safer to cut, drill or screw if you and your work are in a steady, stable position. Use clamps and help from teammates.
  4. Cut away from all eyes. Be especially careful when cutting stiff wire or wood. Cut this material close to the floor or under the table. Wear eye protection glasses.
Law of the Build-It-Yourself Laboratory:
  1. Respect your teammates. Tools, materials and especially ideas must be shared generously.
  2. Respect your laboratory. Sort parts and materials. Put tools in their place. Clean up.
  3. Don't do anything you would be embarrassed to tell your parents.

Build-It-Yourself Spirit:

The word's, "I can't" are forbidden.
The Build-It-Yourself laboratory is for builders. Mean machines will not be encouraged.

Please review these rules with your child. Thank you for your cooperation.
